Director Erik Matti on ‘Crazy Rich Asians’: “Caricature acting, cliche insights, bad direction”

Director Erik Matti aired his sentiments on the international film “Crazy Rich Asians” in a Facebook post and referred to it as “just a piece of old school 90’s style TV movie.”

On his Facebook account, Matti shared a photo of “Crazy Rich Asians” poster where queen of all media Kris Aquino appeared as Princess Intan, alongside his movie review.

He wrote: “No matter how successful this #CrazyRichAsian movie is, it’s still just a piece of old school 90’s style TV movie. Caricature acting, white man’s view on asians, cliche insights wrapped in flashy modern parties, tita sensibilities, bad direction. This is no Pretty Woman! Far from it. But who can argue with success? That’s why everyone here I think wants to make a version of this here. #kumitakayamagandanayan”

Matti was first tapped as the director of the upcoming “Darna” movie adaptation and was later replaced by Jerrold Tarog.
