My dad is not expressive. For all the years I’ve been alive, I’ve only ever heard him say “I love you” a few times. But I know he loves me. I do. I know this because I’ve never missed a meal in my life, I always had a roof over my head, always had a Christmas present even when money was tight, bought me a Super Nintendo even if it was used, he never missed any of my basketball games in high school, still records every episode of my soaps on VHS (yes, VHS), always supports my Lakers even if he hates them, and even acquiesced a smile for this photo. My dad has never owned anything fancy; he was just so busy giving his all to us. Personally, I think that’s what he views as wealth. So here’s to you Dad, our provider, for showing me that actions like paying the bills and giving away your car to your son (and settling for a junky, old civic for yourself), is louder than fancy, poetic words. I pray I can call you one day and say: “you can retire now Dad, it’s time to enjoy life.” God knows you deserve it. Happy Father’s Day to you all.
