Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz broke the Philippines’ nearly century-long drought by winning a gold in the women’s 55 kilogram division. Diaz overtook the lifter from People’s Republic of China on her last lift in the clean and jerk to win with a total 224 kilograms.
Kazakhstan took bronze with 213kg.
For winning the first Filipino Olympic gold medalist, Diaz is set to receive P33 million worth of incentives from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and other supporters.
Diaz was competing at her fourth Olympic Games, having been unplaced in Beijing and London.
