House Speaker Allan Peter Cayetano said ABS-CBN can still operate until March 2022 even with its franchise is set to expire March 2020. Cayetano explained that with a pending bill for the renewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise is filed, it is deemed extended.
“Hindi ganoon ka-urgent. Bakit? Kasi hanggang March 2022, pwedeng mag-operate. There’s a concensus that while we’re discussing the issue, walang reason na isara [ang ABS-CBN]. Definitely, before March 2022, possibly in May if we have cooler heads. Worst case, after SONA (State of the Nation Address),” Cayetano said.
Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto shared the same sentiment as Cayetano. Sotto said for as long as a bill is filed in relation to ABS-CBN franchise renewal, it is deemed extended.
“They can still operate. If it is not approved until March of 2022, that is the only time that it is terminated. As long as may na-kafile na bill, it is deemed extended,” Sotto said.
