Celebrity couple Iya Villania and Drew Arellano expressed their thoughts and opinions as they shared the reason why they preferred their children, Primo, Leon, and Alana to be homeschooled.
In Slater Young and Kryz Uy’s Skypodcast, they featured the celebrity couple. During the interview, Iya and Drew admitted that they considered homeschooling their children even before the pandemic. According to Iya, she was the first one who was looking into homeschooling their kids.
“My view kasi is…. I have nothing against the schools that I came from. I studied in Xavier and then of course I have so many Xavier friends, so many great Xavier memories. I went to La Salle for college, also great memories. But then naisip ko, teka lang, ano nga ba ang natutunan ko? Of course great memories with fellow classmates and whatnot but I feel that you don’t need to isolate yourself in school to learn. Parang learning is every day and because of google….” Drew said.
“And there are actually more effective ways of learning” Iya chimed in.
“Ako, feeling ko I wasted so much time learning stuff that I am not interested in. I kind of wasted a lot of time and I wasted my folks’ money because of that…I just feel that most schools are, pano ba ‘to, hindi siya personalized di ba? Parang ano siya eh, one size fits all, aralin ninyo lahat yan… If you fail in one, ayyyy nako you’re not that smart, it shouldn’t be the case.” Drew continued.
“Our main goal is for the kids to learn as soon as possible what they want to do in life, what makes them happy.” Drea shared.
Iya also shared her concern over homeschooling.
“One thing that kind of scares me about homeschool, which is why I feel have, I am more mixed emotions about it, I mean it’s something that I want for my kids, but sometimes I don’t know if I can commit… I don’t know if I can commit to being that parent that can sit down cause it’s still schooling but at home… I guess there are different types of homeschooling.” Iya said.
“Everyone is learning naman e. Kahit na wala sa school, kahit walang curriculum, kahit walang libro, when you go outside and just meet people from different cultures. Talk to them, go to the farm, go to wherever you’re constantly learning, getting pieces of information.” Drew said.
“I still have to look into what kind of homeschooling we’ll be doing. Cause you know it’s hard din with the kids eh because sometimes you’ll also come across kids where a regular school setup might be effective for them. Maybe they need amongst other kids.” Iya shared.
“Drew and I also respect that. Should one day Primo decide, ‘Mama I want to go to school.’ Okay then fine, basta what we want to achieve is we want our children to want to learn. Whatever it is that they want to learn but we want them to want to learn.” Iya added.
