Mariel Rodriguez-Padilla recently shared a sentiment that many in the political sphere didn’t see coming. Her husband, Senator Robin Padilla, has no plans to run in 2028.
For Mariel, the decision isn’t about lack of ambition; it’s about the weight of the work. Speaking with the candor she’s known for, Mariel hinted that the transition from the silver screen to the Senate floor has been a profound journey for Robin, one fueled by a genuine, often exhausting, desire to serve.
During her interview with Julius Babao Unplugged, Mariel again reiterated that Robin has no interest in politics.
“Wala kaming bagong kotse simula nu’ng si Robin ay nanalo, wala kaming bagong bahay, wala kaming bagong kung anuman na katas ng pagiging senador ni Robin, so, ‘yun ang aking taas noong masasabi.” started Mariel.
“I still believe that Robin is not a politician. I feel that the title for Robin is a public servant. Para sa akin yun ah, siyempre sasabihin, siyempre asawa ka, di yan ang eh di sige basta ako ganun ang paniniwala ko,” Mariel said.
“Minsan napapaisip ako na tapusin na lang or sometimes kapag may nasabi na out of context na parang I feel na they don’t deserve him, may mga ganun ako. And then again, there were those days that when I see the indigenous people, when I see the Muslims, how they are so grateful to him, so parang paano sila umaasa,” she continues.
“Robin has no ambition. Robin, from day one, wants to help. Since the day I met him, yun ang consistent kay Robin, sincere and talagang the heart to help; that’s actually why I fell in love with him,” said Mariel.
“To tell you the truth, ayaw niya yung mga people na yun; nate-turn off siya. Nagdesisyon na siya, hindi na siya tatakbo. Ayaw na niya. He’s always saying that because nababagalan siya sa mga bagay-bagay,” she added.

Mariel herself admitted during her interview with Julius that while this is the current “no,” things can always change in the volatile world of public service.
