President Rodrigo Duterte tackles illegal drugs, corruption, death penalty on his 4th SONA

Three years after assuming office, President Rodrigo Duterte delivered his 4th state of the Nation Address (SONA) at the Batasang Pambansa on Monday, July 22.

During his speech which lasted for over one and a half hours, the president tackled about the administration’s war against illegal drugs, corruption among government officials, as well as his request for the Congress to reinstate death penalty for heinous crimes committed in relation to drugs and plunder.

Also part of the key topics in the president’s SONA was his recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping as well as the West Philippine Sea, assuring that the territory “is ours”.

President Duterte also mentioned 5-month battle in Marawi City, the Bangsamoro Organic Law, and the passage of the salary standardization law which includes higher pay for teachers and nurses among other issues he addressed.

Meanwhile, prior to President Duterte’s SONA, Senator Vicente ‘Tito’ Sotto III was reelected as Senate President, Senator Ralph Recto was still Senate President Pro-Tempore, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri was Majority Leader, and Senator Franklin Drilon was Minority Leader.

Taguig City-Pateros Representative Alan Peter Cayetano was also named as Speaker of the House of Representatives after earning 266 votes, and Manila Rep. Benny Abante Jr. as minority leader.
