Iza Calzado to donate blood for treatment of COVID-19 Patients: “this will be my advocacy”

On an IG post on the official Instagram account of Dr. Geraldine Zamora, a snapshot of a conversation between her and Iza Calzado was shared.

Along with the caption pens, “We are seeking people who are fully recovered from COVID-19 & may be able to donate blood as they already have antibodies in their plasma that can attack the virus. Historically, convalescent plasma has been used as a potentially lifesaving treatment when new diseases/infections develop quickly, and no treatments or vaccines were available yet.”

Posted w/ permission. Thank you so much, @missizacalzado! If you’re also a COVID19-survivor & wish to help other patients who are fighting for their lives, please coordinate w/ doctors at the Philippine General Hospital (0917-8053207), St. Luke’s Global (87897700 local 2096), or other hospitals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We are seeking people who are fully recovered from COVID-19 & may be able to donate blood as they already have antibodies in their plasma that can attack the virus. Historically, convalescent plasma has been used as a potentially lifesaving treatment when new diseases/infections develop quickly, and no treatments or vaccines were available yet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The use of convalescent plasma remains to be an experimental treatment at this time and is not yet included in the interim clinical guidelines of the WHO. However, the US FDA has recently released (03/24/220) an emergency investigation new drug application to facilitate access for its use in patients with serious or life-threatening COVID-19 outside of clinical trials. In line with this and the preliminary evidence for safety and efficacy, the COMPASSIONATE use of convalescent plasma therapy may be justifiable for use among patients with severe and life-threatening disease especially in the absence of any other effective therapy.
