Sen. Jinggoy Estrada reacts to “victim blaming” allegations

Senator Jinggoy Estrada reacted to allegations that he resorted to ‘victim blaming’ during the senate inquiry on the cases of actors Sandro Muhlach and Gerald Santos.

Sen. Estrada asked Sandro to narrate what happen to him during the night allegedly he was abused. For Gerald, Sen. Estrada asked why he did not file a case when the incident happened to him.

For this reason, some netizens including TV broadcaster Karen Davila advised senators to be more sympathetic and be more considerate in asking questions.

During a presscon, Sen. Jinggoy explained his position regarding his actions by reading a statement he prepared.

“I understand that my recent questionings in the senate hearing gave the public impression of me being harsh, insensitive, and apathetic.

It was never, never my intention to victim blame or humiliate those who have come out to disclose the tragic realities happening in the movie industry or the entertainment industry, but rather to address a systemic issue that has been hurting our artists workers.

My passionate approach which did not sit well with the public monitoring the proceedings, stems from a deep frustration that this problem have persisted for years.

Pero rest assured I am with you all the way, kay Sandro, kay Gerald, at sa lahat ng biktima ng ganitong klaseng pang-aabuso, kaisa niyo ako.”
