During the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, private prosecutor and veteran litigator Atty. Lorna Kapunan offered a witty commentary on Senator-Judge Robin Padilla:
Sometimes the Senate impeachment hearings are in black and white, and we’re very appreciative that Senator Robin always brings color and surprise and excitement.”
The remark came on the heels of a brief tension during the hearings when Senator Padilla questioned the prosecution panel, labeling their arguments as “one-sided”.
Kapunan lightly poked fun at the notion, calling it the “quote for the day” and explaining that the prosecution must be one-sided because their sole duty is to prosecute. The defense, naturally, does the same for the accused.
When Sen. Robin expressed frustration over the front-row prosecutors’ visible reactions during his questioning, Kapunan offered a graceful, humorous apology: “Kaya lang, siyempre pag lawyer ka at nasa litigation ka, e-emote ka… Hindi naman emote na drama, pero it is an instinctive reaction.”
She reminded the public that despite heated moments on the floor, professional camaraderie remains intact, climaxing her apology with a cheerful, “Senator Robin, sabi mo kaibigan tayo. Forgive na lang!”
