President Duterte places Metro Manila in community quarantine

The President urges everyone to remain calm amidst the COVID-19 outbreak. He explains that life will go on as usual, but with additional restrictions due to the ongoing health crisis.

“For Manila, ayaw namin gamitin ‘yan pero—kasi takot kayo sabihin ‘lockdown’ (For Manila, we don’t want to use this term—because we are afraid of saying the word ‘lockdown’). But it’s a lockdown,”

President Duterte clarifies that the lockdown is not Martial Law, but merely a travel restriction for people who are entering and leaving the Metro Manila area. In addition, he shared that the Chinese government is willing to help mitigate the spread of the virus.

“President Xi Jinping, for all his goodness to us, wrote me a letter and he is willing to help. All we have to do is to ask.” he explained during the press conference.

As of writing, 49 patients around the country have tested positive for the coronavirus.
