Senator Cynthia Villar asks why middle class receives cash aid during pandemic

Senator Cynthia Villar asked the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) as to why the middle class is included as beneficiaries of the Social Amelioration Program (SAP). Villar maintained that middle class people should be excluded from the program because they still work and received their salaries.

In a video posted by News5, Senator Villar was wondering why the middle class should be included when in fact they are still receiving their salaries:

“I want to ask you di ba ang ating families natin in the Philippines is 22 million, di ba? Sabi niyo, 18 million ang bibigyan because they are poor. But do you know that 15 percent of our people are upper middle and then the rich, di ba? Yung 18 million is 82 percent,” said Villar.

“Bakit bibigyan yung middle? Eh may trabaho sila, kahit lockdown, nagsu-sweldo sila. Sa gobyerno, kung employed by the government. Kung employed naman ng local, eh ng mga private, nagsu-sweldo din sila. Kaya nga nahihirapan yung mga companies kasi they have to pay the salaries even if there’s no business.” added the lady Senator.
